Gum grafting is a procedure performed by a periodontist, a doctor who specializes in treatment of the gums. It helps to improve the look of your smile and helps replace lost gum tissue if you’ve suffered from gum disease. Whether grafting for cosmetic reasons or in part of oral well-being, our periodontist can help you determine the right treatment option.
Reasons for Gum Grafting
Cosmetic gum grafts are performed to improve the look of your smile. Gums can be asymmetrical, or rise too high or too low on the teeth, giving you an overly gummy smile or making your teeth look disproportionately long. Gum grafting will give your teeth a more balanced look.
Gum disease can cause gums to recede, or can require gum tissue to be removed to prevent the spread of infection. In these cases, gum grafts can be used to replace tissue that has receded or that has been surgically removed. Not only do these gum grafts help smiles look their best, they can also prevent increased sensitivity that can result from receding gums or tissue loss that exposes parts of your tooth roots. This type of gum recession can also eventually lead to tooth loss, but gum grafts protect your teeth and help you keep them strong and healthy.
The procedure for both types of gum grafts are essentially the same, although there are some differences, particularly regarding how and where the surgeon collects the tissue used to create the grafts.
How Gum Grafts are Performed
As with other tissue grafts, most gum grafts are performed by removing a piece of tissue from another part of the body and placing it in the area where it is needed. With gum grafts, tissue is typically harvested from the palate (the roof of the mouth) or from gum tissue near the teeth being treated. The type of tissue used depends upon the condition of your gums and how much tissue is required. In some cases, your cosmetic dentist might choose to use tissue from a tissue bank.
