As adults, it can be difficult to brush our teeth as long as we really should. The standard of two minutes is often really dropped down to one and a half, maybe one, but it’s impossible for us to ignore the fact that there are plenty of adults that avoid brushing their teeth on a routine basis. As an adult this is difficult, but as a child, two minutes can often seem like an eternity of time that is being wasted on something they don’t see any benefit from. At Dr. Trainor’s dentist office, we do our best to play an active part in the dentistry of children, and we know that it needs to extend beyond our office in order to be successful. Here are a few tips you can use to make brushing regularly a little better for your child.
Listen to a Song
Brushing your teeth along with a song can help make the time go faster. Find a song that is the same length as the time needed to complete brushing that can serve as a timer. There are a few songs that actually have the subject of teeth brushing that are perfect for brushing teeth with young children. One of the more commonly used ones is from an episode of the well-known child’s show Elmo’s World. There are also various apps that you can use to time the teeth brushing to make sure you get the right amount of time done.
Children loving being able to play pretend. If you have a kid there’s a chance that you’ve seen your child playing kitchen or doctor or something of the sort. Start incorporating dentist into their make believe play and you will see that their interest in dental care begins to rise. This will also help them prepare for their first couple of dentist appointments so that they are much more comfortable while they’re in the actual dentist chair.
If you’re looking for other ways to improve the way that your child is brushing their teeth, you can always set up an appointment to stop Dr. Trainor’s office and have one of our team members and improve their comfort level in the office.
