While the smile that we get to enjoy at the end of the months of braces is definitely worth it, maintaining the smile becomes important so that multiple treatments are not being paid off.
The primary method that is used to maintain a perfect smile is a retainer. Although they may not be the most comfortable form of keeping your pearly whites lined up nicely, retainers to ensure that your teeth don’t space back out. Why is wearing a retainer so important?
As we mentioned before, retainers are used to keep teeth in line. As our bodies grow and as we use our teeth for chewing, they are subject to movement. While it may not seem like a whole lot of shifting is happening in your mouth, a couple of months, sometimes even weeks, without a retainer and you will definitely see a difference in the way that your teeth look. Keep them aligned by wearing a retainer regularly.
How long should you wear a retainer?
In regards to wearing on a daily basis, we suggest wearing your retainer while you sleep at night. That way you can still enjoy the gorgeous smile the braces left you with, while still ensuring they stay in line. Long term, we suggest wearing your retainer for no less than a year, but truth be told, the longer you wear your retainer the longer you can count on having a beautiful smile.
Are there different types of retainers?
There are in fact different types of retainers. If you are someone that would like to wear your retainer on a pretty frequent basis but don’t want to deal with the more than obvious appearance, you can talk to Dr. Trainor about the clear retainer options that we have. These retainers still maintain your smile, but eliminate the physical bar that the classic retainer sported.
