Another myth is being focused on this week and it’s one that tons of people could probably learn something from. One desire, across the board, is a healthy set of pearly whites. It’s the pearly part that can be difficult to obtain. With so many people wanting gorgeous white smiles, plenty of teeth whitening procedures have been created. Unfortunately, these procedures aren’t the most affordable, but with the desire for a white smile still present, people turn to do-it-yourself (DIY) techniques. Our myth this week breaks down the different reasons that these techniques don’t work.
Myth: DIY teeth whitening techniques totally work.
Truth: DIY whitening techniques don’t always work and could damage your teeth.
There are plenty of DIY techniques, each with different ingredients and different procedures, and each with a different reason they don’t work. Here are just a few of the DIY techniques that we’ve caught wind of, and exactly why they don’t work.
Baking Soda & Water
This technique is one that we’ve found on pinterest, on dentist boards and just from word of mouth. The combination of baking soda and water, to create a paste, is not uncommon but still won’t provide you with any whiter of a smile.
Why doesn’t this work?
While baking soda is known for being able to remove stains, this isn’t the ingredient that’s used in teeth whitening procedures that actually provide results. While baking soda does play a part in the process, the lack of other, stronger ingredients is what keeps this technique from working.
Strawberries & Baking Soda Paste
While the first recipe that we covered was lacking ingredients, strawberries are not going to get the job done either. We’re not entirely sure why this ingredient was added in the first place, but there are more damages that this ingredient does than simply not whitening your teeth.
What added damages are there?
Strawberries are high in sugars, even if they are natural, they are still very capable of breaking down the enamel of your teeth and making them vulnerable to cavities.
Store Bought Kits
You can find plenty of teeth whitening kits on the shelves of your local grocery store, but these kits will still provide you with sub par results. Even the ones that you wind up spending a shiny penny on will not give you the white smile that you’re after.
Why don’t these kits work?
Truthfully, it comes down to ingredients. The procedures that you pay for at the dentist office provide you with beautiful white teeth because of the ingredients that are used. It is this precise combination and particular ingredients that make it possible in the first place. These kits are usually missing this ingredient and that’s what you pay for, a lack of ingredients. Which will, again, provide you with less than adequate results.
If you’re looking for a whiter smile, we strongly suggest working with a member of our team and determining a way to get it done professionally. While it may be pricey, it’s the only way that you’re going to get the job done accurately. Each of the techniques that you find online or on the shelves of your local supermarket may seem affordable, but will never be able to provide you with the results that you want. Schedule an appointment with your dentist today and you’ll we’ll explain to you just why these techniques will never provide you with the results that you want.
